Choosing Your First Competition Holster

A good competition holster is one of the most impactful gear upgrades you can make. It affects draw speed, consistency, and safety — and the wrong choice can cost you time or get you DQ'd.

Division Rules Matter

Before you buy, check your division's rules. USPSA Production and Carry Optics require the holster to be behind the hip bone. IDPA has concealment requirements. Open division allows race holsters with no restrictions. Getting this wrong means your gear isn't legal for competition.

OWB Kydex Is the Standard

For most competitors, an outside-the-waistband (OWB) Kydex holster is the right starting point. It offers a consistent draw, positive retention, and works across most divisions. Look for adjustable retention and a solid belt attachment.

Recommended Options by Budget

Entry ($40-60): Blade-Tech Classic OWB or Comp-Tac International. Both are proven, widely available, and legal in most divisions.

Mid-range ($60-100): Red Hill Tactical or Ben Stoeger Pro Shop holsters. Better adjustability and fit options for specific guns.

Race ($100+): CR Speed or DAA race holsters for Open division. These are purpose-built for speed and not legal in most limited divisions.

Fit and Practice

Whatever you choose, make sure it fits your specific gun model. Then practice your draw — a lot. Your holster is only as fast as your draw stroke is consistent. Use the Draw drill category in Range Buddy to build a repeatable presentation.

Belt Matters Too

A competition holster needs a rigid belt. A standard leather belt will flex and shift. Look for a double-layer or inner/outer belt system from CR Speed, DAA, or Blade-Tech.
